The Importance of Sleep On Our Health – And How to Get More Of It

There is no doubt that adequate sleep, proper nutrition, and regular exercise are critical to our overall well-being. According to a 2020 study, improving one of these lifestyle factors could improve one’s quality of life, but improving all three could improve both physical and mental well-being.

We are constantly reminded of the importance of sleep to our health in terms of accelerating post-workout recovery, improving concentration, maximizing athletic performance, strengthening immunity, and balancing hormones and mood swings.

The National Sleep Foundation recommends seven to nine hours of restorative and deep sleep for adults in order to feel rested the next day.

So, what happens when you don’t get enough sleep? Sleep deprivation can harm our health by increasing our risk of diabetes, heart disease, strokes, and other cognitive functions such as appetite. A non-restrictive balanced diet that fits your lifestyle and workout routine can help you lose weight and gain energy by providing enough calories, carbs, proteins, fats, vitamins, and minerals, all of which help you sleep better.

If you have trouble falling asleep, try these tips:

  • Avoid drinking caffeine late in the afternoon, such as coffee, tea, and soda, if you have trouble falling asleep.
  • Avoid eating two hours before going to bed to give your body time to digest the food.
  • Maintain a consistent workout schedule, aiming for a 30-45 minute workout three times per week.
